Thinking Challenge #10 – “Ships Meet”

By , June 22, 2010 3:20 pm

Here is this week’s thinking challenge. This puzzle is from the book BrainMatics Logic Puzzles by Ivan Moscovich. As noted in the book, “This beautiful problem was invented by Edouard Lucas, the famous French 19th-century mathematician.” Enjoy!

“Every day at noon, a ship leaves Le Havre for New York and another ship leaves New York for Le Havre, at exactly the same time. The trip last seven days and seven nights. How many New York-LeHavre ships will the Le Havre-New York ship that departs today meet during its voyage to New York?”

Thinking Challenge #9 – “Chessboard Squares”

By , June 16, 2010 9:57 am

Yesterday’s puzzle turned out to be way too easy so I have decided to break routine and post a 2nd puzzle in the same week. This puzzle is from the book BrainMatics Logic Puzzles by Ivan Moscovich. In the book it is ranked as difficult, however, with so many super smart testers it may end up being cracked easily. ;) Enjoy!

“How many squares of different sizes can you find along the grid of a chessboard? Offhand, you might say there are 64 squares. But there are larger squares than the 64-unit squares in the square matrix.

Can you find the total number of squares of different sizes?”

Thinking Challenge #7 – “The Unusual Paragraph”

By , June 10, 2010 7:53 pm

Here is the latest puzzle. Enjoy!

“Study this paragraph and all things in it. What is vitally wrong with it? Actually, nothing in it is wrong, but you must admit that it is most unusual. Don’t just zip through it quickly, but study it scrupulously. With luck you should spot what is so particular about it and all words found in it. Can you say what it is? Tax your brains and try again. Don’t miss a word or a symbol. It isn’t all that difficult, is it?”

By , May 19, 2010 1:02 pm

Here is another of the games and puzzles I offered to share on my blog. Enjoy!

In a box you have 13 white marbles and 15 black marbles. You also have 28 black marbles outside the box. Remove two marbles, randomly, from the box. If they are of different colors, put the white one back in the box. If they are the same color, take them out and put a black marble back in the box. Continue this until only one marble remains in the box. What color is the last marble?
